2019 United Airlines AOPA High School Aviation STEM Symposium

The 2019 AOPA High School Aviation STEM Symposium brings dedicated educators from around the nation for two full days of sharing insights, ideas, and best practices for starting and building aviation STEM programs. The AOPA High School Aviation STEM Symposium is the ONLY high school event in the nation that specifically targets aviation and aerospace content. The need for pilots, aerospace engineers, scientists, technologists, and technicians continues to grow. Industry forecasts project shortfalls in many of these fields. The AOPA Aviation STEM Symposium is a great opportunity for educators and administrators to discover how they can prepare students for success in these exciting and well-paying careers.

STEM Program Overview

The program to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education is an innovative proposal to produce competitive students in the STEM disciplines. The primary purpose of this project is to increase and broaden underrepresented minority participation in the nation’s STEM workforce through focused recruitment, retention and mentoring programs, and by successfully graduating students in STEM disciplines. Kentucky State University is the only historically black college or university (HBCU) in Kentucky and has significant potential for training minority students in STEM fields.

Earn a double major in STEM Education and content major (i.e., mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth science, physical science, computer science) with secondary teaching certification (grades 8-12) in one or more state-certifiable STEM subjects in just 4 years (120 credit hours).

Southeastern Kentucky STEM Ecosystem

Southeastern Kentucky STEM Ecosystem includes 11 high needs counties that are part of a Promise Zone area. Promise Zones are extremely high poverty areas where local stakeholders collaborate and leverage resources to help address regional priorities such as improving educational outcomes, leveraging public and private resources, or increasing economic opportunity. Partners for Education at Berea College convenes the Southeastern Kentucky ecosystem using a results based and collective impact framework. The partnership integrates the work of school districts, higher education and businesses to bring awareness to STEM career pathways and to ensure that youth in the focus counties have access to high-quality supports and STEM programming. The Southeastern Kentucky STEM Ecosystem brings together a diverse group of cross-sector partners with a goal to inspire all learners to become visionary STEM creators and innovators through cross sector collaboration and partnership that identify, develop, and support real world application of inquiry based knowledge.
