The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Advisory Council is established by M.G.L. Chapter 6, Section 218 in order to expand access to high-quality STEM education for students across the Commonwealth.
The Massachusetts STEM Summit is hosted by the Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, and the UMass Donahue Institute. The theme for the next STEM Summit, See Yourself in STEM: Connecting Educators to Employers, signals the launch of an exciting new era for this iconic event.
In 2004, following the US Department of Education’s National Summits on Mathematics and Science, Massachusetts launched the nation’s first statewide STEM Summit. Since that time, leaders and practitioners from the Commonwealth’s education, business, and government sectors, as well as students, parents and other community members gather annually at the Summit to share information, projects, and ideas.
Massachusetts STEM Week 2020 takes place from October 19 – 23 (inclusive of the weekend before and after), and is organized by the Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council in partnership with the state’s 9 Regional STEM Networks.
Based on the success of the program over the last two years, i2 Learning will again be offering immersive project-based STEM programs for 5th — 8th grade students during Massachusetts STEM Week in October 2020.

MLSC STEM Equipment and Professional Development grants enables the purchase of equipment and supplies for high schools and middle schools in the Commonwealth in order to train students in life sciences technology and research. The program also offers funding for teacher professional development to ensure that all recipient schools have teachers trained to use the equipment and have access to relevant curricula that deploys the equipment in labs and activities that support learning goals throughout the academic year.

Massachusetts position as the top state for innovation is bolstered by the many top-tier academic and research institutions.
Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) programs provide you with the academic background and training you need to pursue a bachelor's degree, or to immediately launch a career in technology or science fields. STEM programs cover a wide-range of exciting areas such as mathematics and computer science, engineering technology, biotechnology, and life sciences. Our graduates have transferred to top bachelor of science programs at Boston University, UMass Lowell, UMass Boston, Wellesley College, with many continuing to earn their advanced degrees.
As afterschool programs have expanded their offerings, many providers and funders have seen STEM as a natural fit for the setting. The strong focus on youth development allows for youthdriven exploration that can provide students with opportunities to immerse themselves in STEM learning, which complements the school day with a different approach to teaching and learning. There is room for experimentation and failure, and time for children to develop strong relationships with mentors and peers—all while gaining knowledge and skills. These are all vital for future access and participation in STEM fields and careers.
STEMatch brings together Boston Public Schools, Community Colleges, and high technology companies, organizing and supporting programs inside and outside of the classroom to inspire interest in STEM subjects and help make a brighter future more accessible to all in the Commonwealth.

Our goal is to ensure our nation’s youth is competitive globally in STEM fields through exciting, informative and engaging training by practicing scientists. Our lesson topics address many standards within the new Next Generation Science Standards, as well as other state standards.
The Office of STEM is part of DESE's Center for Instructional Support. Responsibilities include: Articulating high quality learning standards for mathematics, science and technology/engineering (STE), and digital literacy and computer science (DLCS); Identifying, developing, and disseminating a rich set of implementation resources; Facilitating networking opportunities for educators to ensure that best practices are shared across districts; and; Actively communicating with stakeholders about new developments in the STEM fields.
