The Beverly K. Fine School of the Sciences has made it a priority to support education at all levels in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The programs listed below demonstrate our commitment to STEM outreach and showcase the goals of Stevenson University to not only encourage students to pursue careers in these challenging fields, but also to help transform K-12 education by training teachers in inquiry-based curricula.
STEM Extra Curricular Activities
Calvert Hall's STEM program is a comprehensive certificate program integrating academic courses with extracurricular activities, self-directed study, or internships in all four areas of STEM. Our STEM program is designed to encourage students in the skills of problem-solving, discovery, and investigative learning. Formal classroom experiences and extracurricular activities will engage students in the practical application of STEM and 21st century skills. Any rising sophomore is eligible to participate and must request status by notifying the STEM Coordinator in the summer between the freshman and sophomore years. STEM candidates participate in the program during the sophomore, junior and senior years. STEM candidates must satisfy all requirements to continue in the STEM program each year and be acknowledged as a STEM graduate.
To address the commission's four recommendations, a STEM initiative was created in Maryland. As a result, the Carroll County Public School System is operating under a STEM Initiative grant issued by the Maryland State Department of Education. Additionally, STEM is an integral part of Maryland's Race to the Top application. As part of this this process lessons should allow for real life applications and problem solving using integrated content.
The AFCEA Central Maryland Education Foundation provides scholarships every year for for aspiring engineers, technicians, programmers, military personnel and government officials. Financial assistance is made available for students living or attending school within our local community, focused on the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). There are many opportunities to volunteer for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) events in Maryland.
The STEM facility has been designed as a U.S. Green Building and will meet Silver qualifications for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). This state and locally sponsored project involves renovation of and an addition to the existing Continuing Education building (Building 200) on the McHenry campus.
At Girl Scouts, we’re committed to increasing girls’ involvement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and ensuring that every girl has opportunities to explore and build potential career paths in these important fields.
The Master of Arts Leadership in Teaching: STEM program offers a dynamic array of courses that are not available at other institutions. We focus on increasing the skills and knowledge of teachers while building their capacity to teach using STEM pedagogy and resources by providing hands-on, problem-based situations.
STEM in OST is a bridge between youth development and education that offers young people “hands-on, minds-on” intentional and relevant learning opportunities. The OST environment is perfectly suited for students to pursue STEM avenues and inspire further exploration of STEM careers.

Our curriculum integrates an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and STEM specific programs and pathways.
MDIS is the nation’s first STEM academy with an International Baccalaureate (IB) program for students in grades 1st-12th. The mission of MDIS is to provide an academically rigorous and supportive college-preparatory education with a focus on the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines in order to prepare students to become creative problem solvers, effective communicators, and tomorrow's leaders who think ethically, independently, and globally.
Maryland MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) is an exciting and engaging after-school program for students in grades 3–12 designed to spark their interest in STEM education and STEM careers. The program seeks to: increase the number of engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and related professionals at technical and management levels, and encourage and assist minorities and females in achieving success in these fields.
The Maryland STEM Festival, Inc. (MSF) has been established to operate the Festival. The mission of the Festival is to encourage all students regardless of background and experience to take a greater interest in STEM with the hope they will pursue a STEM related/focused career. The MSF works for an entire year recruiting as many organizations as it can to participate in the Festival, such as libraries, museums, public and private schools, colleges, universities, government agencies and private companies.
The Maryland STEM Festival is a collection of fun, mostly free, family oriented events promoting Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics throughout the State. Last November, over 40,000 Marylanders attended nearly 500 STEM focused events during the 10 day Festival. Our mission is to encourage students of all ages, regardless of their background or experience, to take a greater interest in STEM with the hope they will pursue a STEM job or career. .Maryland is one the few states in the Nation to have a state-wide STEM or Science Festival. Support and interest in the Festival continue to grow. The 2015 Festival consisted of 330 events, the 2016 Festival had nearly 500 events. We expect similar growth for the 2017 Festival. The Festival will run from October 31st through November 12th and will spotlight the connection between STEM and Agriculture. Among the expected 600 events will be several signatures events such as the Ag and STEM Summit, Blue Collar STEM Conference, Hispanic STEM Awareness Event, African American STEM Awareness Event, Sports and STEM Expo and the Night of Cyber. Several very large events have joined the Festival including BrickFest Live and the 47th Annual Waterfowl Festival.
Our math, reading, and STEM summer program is designed to help parents stay on a budget while ensuring that their child develops the confidence and skills needed to advance academically. Our program helps students develop skills needed to survive Math, English Language Arts, and Science per the Common State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.
We celebrate the remarkable contributions of Maryland women in STEM with an exciting exhibit. The exhibit honorees include Marylanders: Mary Cleave, engineer and astronaut; Claire L. Parkinson, climatologist and coordinator of Women of NASA Goddard; Esther McCready, nurse who led the challenge to successfully integrate Maryland’s nursing and other professional schools; and Andrea Evans, the founder of kidGINEERING, a special program for young children. The contributions of the Maryland women featured at the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center have made a difference not only for Maryland, but for the entire nation and the world.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) camps are packed with challenging and imaginative activities geared just for kids. Led by professionals, these programs offer an ideal blend of challenging and imaginative activities in a supportive and nurturing environment. Kids can learn how to design an electronic game, or create incredible LEGO® worlds. In a STEAM camp imagination comes to life and all things are possible!

This scholarship is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program. The NSF S-STEM Scholarship is designed to support full-time students majoring in any of the following content areas: Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Life Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science, Information Technology, Physical Sciences and Mathematics. It aims to provide scholarship support for academically-talented, financially-needy engineering students, and train these students to become effective scientific and technological contributors when entering the engineering workforce.
The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math program is open to all students as a WCPS Academy designed to serve students in K-12 grades. Students must complete the application and be accepted to the STEM Academy. During the first two years of the high school program, students will lay the groundwork for one of five career pathways. At the end of the sophomore year, they will choose one of the pathways as a concentration. This is a foundation for choosing any college major and/or career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math.
The mission is to promote and improve STEM education in order to inspire and prepare Maryland’s students to be career and college ready and STEM proficient members of society.

St. Mary’s County Public School System has developed a rigorous and unique program of study emphasizing the core areas of mathematics and science with an infusion of technology and engineering. This STEM program is available to all SMCPS students grades 4-12 through an application process and is housed at three schools: Lexington Park Elementary School, Spring Ridge Middle School, and Great Mills High School.

Since 2013, the Worcester County Department of Economic Development has provided a STEM summer enrichment continuum for students ages 12-24. Our STEM Summer Programs connect Worcester County STEM businesses with the future workforce and provide opportunities for classroom studies to be applied to real life tasks.
