The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is thrilled to announce a $500,000 leadership commitment from IDEXX to create The IDEXX STEM Learning Hub in the new Museum & Theatre on Thompson’s Point, scheduled to open in 2020. This creative collaboration is designed to enhance opportunities for experiential STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning for Maine kids and families.
“STEM Guides” are individuals who connect 10- to 18-year-old youth from rural Maine to out-of-school STEM learning opportunities that already exist in their communities, including after-school programs, clubs, camps, library activities, special events, contests, and competitions.
Growing Future STEM Teachers in Maine (GFSTM) seeks to recruit and prepare future science and math teachers, and provide continued support as they enter the classroom in high-need school districts. GFSTM, a partnership between Saint Joseph’s College and Southern Maine Community College, is committed to growing the pool of highly qualified secondary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teachers in Maine by creating and supporting multiple pathways into the profession and helping districts “grow their own.”
The Interactive STEM team at EDC is a major partner in the Research + Practice Collaboratory, a five-year initiative funded by the National Science Foundation to strengthen and reframe the relationship between research and teacher practice in STEM education in K–12 and informal settings. The Interactive STEM team is leading the R+P Collaboratory’s interactive technologies focal area.

The Maine Center for Research in STEM Education (RiSE Center) is an interdisciplinary center organized to conduct research, graduate education, and professional development, and to build community partnerships focused on improving the research and research-based practice of STEM education at all levels of instruction. The Maine STEM Collaborative focuses on increasing the quality of STEM education, aspirations, and public awareness through the integration, coordination, and promotion of efforts throughout the state.
Programs are designed for groups of 5-25 and run for ninety minutes or two hours. They can be enjoyed by one or multiple school classrooms, libraries, home school groups, or by any other group of children who would enjoy a hands-on foray into science and technology. More than one program can be presented at one time so that children can be offered more than one program. Some programs are great for large groups, so more than 25 children can be accommodated. STEM Sisters is an initiative out of the University of Southern Maine to be established as a network for young girls in the Greater Portland area to connect to, find support, and be encouraged to pursue pathways through STEM learning and education.
