Events: Rosie’s Girls Summer Camp

An exciting six-week summer day camp, which allows girls between fourth and eighth grade the chance to get their hands dirty, express themselves creatively and explore what the world has to offer them – and what they have to offer the world. The program combines hands-on instruction in the skilled trades, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with lots of art activities and games, while supporting girls in finding their own strength, power and confidence in a fun, positive atmosphere.

Providence After School Alliance (PASA) AfterZone STEM – FUSE Initiative

The Providence After School Alliance’s STEM Ecosystem consists of a team of informal community educators, middle school math and science teachers, district curriculum heads, STEM related businesses serving on PASA’s Business Engagement committee, the Rhode Island STEM Center, faculty from RI College’s School of Education, and faculty from the University of Rhode Island. The primary focus of our STEM Ecosystem is to help improve STEM inquiry practices in Providence’s middle school summer STEM program and transfer lessons learned to PASA’s middle and high school after school systems.

Providence After School Alliance — ServeRI

The Providence After School Alliance (PASA) mission is to expand and improve quality expanded learning opportunities for Providence middle and high school youth by organizing a citywide public/private system. In the past 12 years, PASA has served 14,000 young people, that is around 1,500 youth annually, of which 1,200 are in middle school and 300 in high school. PASA is the only large-scale system providing high-quality after school programming in Providence and has become a national model replicated in over 40 cities.

Rhode Island Students of the Future is a 501-c-3 non profit organization that engages students in STEM learning through youth robotics. Rhode Island School of Design Launches STEAM Map to Demonstrate Global Activity and Support for the Movement

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is launching a new STEAM Map today during an industry briefing being held on Capitol Hill in collaboration with US House STEAM Caucus Co-Chairs Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and Aaron Schock (R-IL). This innovative mapping tool visualizes STEAM activity worldwide to enable advocates, practitioners and followers of this movement to connect with each other, share best practices and show decision makers the impact and relevancy of art and design. The STEAM Map, which can be viewed globally or as locally as individual Congressional districts, can be found at map.stemtosteam.org.

STEM Grant to Create Apprenticeship Program for High School Students

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) announced today that Rhode Island is one of six states to be awarded a STEM apprenticeship grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This $500,000 grant will fund the launch of the Rhode Island Youth Apprenticeship Program, an apprenticeship program that starts during senior year, with more than 100 students statewide placed in apprenticeship positions in cybersecurity and data analysis by 2022.

STEM education gets boost in Narragansett

Local education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) will get a boost thanks to a recent grant from the East Bay Educational Collaborative (EBEC). Narragansett High School chemistry teachers Sarah Krous and Chris Dolos will receive $20,000 worth of equipment, supplies and training from EBEC, which received funding for the program courtesy of a grant from the US Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Times2 (Times squared ) STEM Academy is a K-12 accredited charter public school committed to improve mathematics, engineering and science studies for urban youth. In 2004, RIHEBC completed a financing for Times2 STEM Academy to fund the construction of a 60,000 square foot addition and gymnasium, pictured above.
