At the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium's STEM Lab, students perform authentic scientific research, driven by their own curiosity, and inspired by mentors and educators with a passion for discovery. ​This state-of-the-art lab was established in partnership with the New Hampshire Academy of Sciences (NHAS) to address the need in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom for middle and high school students to learn the scientific method. The facility is part of the Fairbanks Museum campus and provides access to a wide array of advanced scientific instruments and outstanding educational resources.

To succeed in the 21st century, Vermont’s students need access to high-quality, research-based science education. In 2013, Vermont adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as a foundation for science instruction. Based on the Framework for K-12 Education, the NGSS refocuses K-12 science education to improve readiness for college and STEM careers as well as preparing students to become informed, knowledgeable citizens. The standards are designed so that students apply scientific practices, ask questions, problem solve, make mistakes, and correct misconceptions, with the larger goal of reaching deeper scientific understanding.

VELI-STEM is a three year grant from IMLS and in partnership with the Vermont Center for the Book and Vermont Department of Libraries that focuses on Physical Science through inquiry. Year one examined Force and Motion; Year Two examines Building and Engineering and Year Three examines Air and Water. The primary goal of Physical Science experiences for children is to allow them to explore objects, materials and events in new and different ways.
