A regional perspective for Georgia’s workforce development makes sense for several reasons. Georgia’s vast geography and large population, as well as the state’s diverse mixture of urban, suburban, and rural areas and multiple sectors, challenge the idea of a “one-size-fits-all” approach to workforce development for Georgia’s STEM economy. In short, what works for Atlanta may not necessarily be appropriate for Macon or Valdosta. Efforts to improve STEM education and workforce preparation ultimately benefit Georgia as a whole, but economic growth remains local. It remains incumbent for regions and their communities to become selfreliant, if interdependent economic engines for STEM that involve each region’s schools, colleges and universities, and industries.

Students from the College of Engineering, along with other STEM majors, will receive an additional 0.5 to their average HOPE GPA for each rigorous math, science, technology, or engineering course, if the student initially earns either a B, C, or D.
Boxlight, a global leader in digital teaching technologies, has been named a finalist in the sixth annual Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) and TAG Education Collaborative (TAG-ED) STEM Education awards program. The company is a contender in the Corporate Outreach category following the successful Boxlight STEM Day initiative it launched in 2016 and due it recently becoming the convening agency for the Georgia Girls STEM Collaborative formed under the auspices of the National Girls Collaborative Project.
STEM is an acronym which represents the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM education encourages a cross-curriculum approach to teaching and learning which incorporates concepts and standards across these disciplines of study for students. In Georgia, schools have an opportunity to work toward becoming STEM-certified programs or schools. As a system, we are actively pursuing having STEM-certified programs at each of our schools. However, it is a process, and it requires deliberate planning and preparation. Extensive STEM-related activities currently exist in all of our schools, and we will continue to expand and refine what we offer our students as we move further toward becoming certified.
Brookwood Elementary School in Dalton City Schools was the 12th Georgia school to be STEM Certified by the Georgia Department of Education.
Bulloch County Schools is establishing STEM Exploratory Labs in each of its nine elementary schools for all enrolled K-5 students.

Middle Georgia RESA GaPSC approved STEM Endorsement for a total of 16 PLUs. MGRESA offers the two courses needed to earn a STEM Endorsement. The courses must be taken in sequence. This program endeavors to abide by and provide expertise in accordance with the PSC rule 505-3-.94 STEM ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM . The STEM Endorsement is divided into two courses and must be taken in sequence. Completion of the two courses is required in order to add the STEM Endorsement to an existing level 4 professional teaching certificate or higher. Middle Georgia RESA’s STEM Endorsement program is designed to equip candidates to create and implement STEM curriculum aligned to career connections and to ensure that students are provided authentic hands-on STEM based learning experiences in their daily instruction.
On April 1, 2017, Governor Nathan Deal announced two new grant awards for the Georgia Rural AP STEM Initiative to support the successful implementation of AP programs in the areas of Computer Science and Statistics. This is the second round of funding for this grant, and in total, seven districts have been awarded funds to support STEM-integrated curriculum for Georgia students.

The STEM Education Endorsement is comprised of 4 graduate courses in STEM (ECSE 7274, ECSE 7275, ECSE 7276 and ECSE 7277), and is approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. This endorsement will provide focused professional development for certified education professionals to use the principles of STEM education in their teaching practice. Successful completion of all 4 courses qualifies certified teachers in the state of Georgia to apply for the STEM Education Endorsement, which is an add-on to their Georgia teaching certificate. All four courses can be transferred into the M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education.

STEM is a pivotal part of the American economy, but student interest and performance in these key subjects is falling. In an effort to ensure that today’s children become tomorrow’s STEM leaders, each state has devised its own initiatives to promote STEM education. To this end, the state of Georgia has enacted several programs that aim to improve STEM instruction, increase student engagement and inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.
The Georgia STEM MBA* is a one-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree option for current University of Georgia undergraduates majoring in an eligible Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline. There are 45 University of Georgia majors eligible for this degree option. This specialized program is designed for high-achieving undergraduate students who want a broad base of foundational business courses and the business skills needed for professional advancement and career success. The curriculum is comprised of 8 “MBA Core” courses, an experiential learning course, a business intelligence course, and an additional elective of your choosing. In addition, the Communications and Career Effectiveness course will prepare you to be an effective leader and communicator in future business roles.

In an effort to increase institutional participation in the University System of Georgia STEM Initiative, the System refocused the Initiative by providing support for institutions to develop and implement a campus-wide STEM Education Improvement Plan.

In Georgia, STEM education is defined as an integrated curriculum (as opposed to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics taught in isolation) that is driven by problem solving, discovery, exploratory project- / problem-based learning, and student-centered development of ideas and solutions. The saturation of technology in most fields means that all students, not just those who plan to pursue a STEM profession, will require a solid foundation in STEM to be productive members of the workforce.
